Truffle hunting near Siena begins at a farmhouse in the Crete Senesi, where the truffle hunter and the trained dogs are waiting. Together you walk into the woods above the farm, and an English-speaking interpreter comes along to talk you through the truffles, the dogs, the forest and the surrounding countryside.

The best moment is lifting a fresh truffle from the soil yourself, with bare hands. Along the way you pick up tips on how to store truffles and use them in the kitchen. The hunt takes place inside a private truffle reserve and usually lasts one to two hours, depending on the weather and on how lucky the hunt turns out. So that the dogs work at their best, it is held in the early morning or the late afternoon.
