Description
A private Siena walking tour starts in the centre with a local guide and follows the thread that holds the city together: its contrade. Siena is divided into 17 of them, and the guide explains how each neighbourhood works, how rivalries form and why belonging to one lasts a lifetime. Along the medieval streets you see where that identity shows in everyday life, and why it comes alive at the Palio.
The route reaches Piazza del Campo, the square where locals meet, and the stage of civic life and seasonal celebrations, far more than a postcard view. From there the walk heads to the Siena Cathedral, which you enter with pre-booked priority tickets, so the queue stays outside. The guide keeps the visit on meaning rather than a list of names: how the building reflects the city's artistic ambition, wealth and old rivalries, with its marble interior, its artworks and the famous Piccolomini Library.
Along the way the guide also points out food and wine traditions, artisan corners and streets off the main routes.
