Description
The Church of San Pietro alle Scale, on Via San Pietro in Siena, is a 13th-century church remodeled in late Baroque style: a single nave with stucco altars that holds, among other things, a polyptych attributed to Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
The polyptych by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, now split up, shows the Madonna and Child with four saints and is the oldest work here. Above the high altar is Rutilio Manetti's Rest on the Flight into Egypt, from 1621. Next to the entrance there is still a fragment of a fresco with Saint Catherine by Liberale da Verona, from around 1470.
Manetti also painted the processional banner to the left of the altar, on both sides: facing the altar, the Madonna in glory with two saints; facing the wall, Saint Catherine with another saint.
Above the portal, a relief shows Saint Peter in glory among angels. Not to be confused with San Pietro alla Magione, the other Sienese church dedicated to the apostle.
